Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to pass the Carried Interest Fairness Act, cut defense spending waste, and reject any effort to repeal our CFPB’s anti-junk fee rules. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Patriotic Millionaires helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass the Carried Interest Fairness Act, which would tax the “carried interest” income hedge fund managers make as, like, income. Our tax laws currently allow hedge fund managers to pay a much lower rate on their income than we do on our income, and no one can convincingly argue that hedge fund managers deserve a lower tax rate than working families. I know, because I’ve heard the arguments: don’t tax them higher or you’ll never have a cancer cure – oh, you mean like now? Yikes, can-do country and all.
The Coalition on Human Needs helps you tell your Congressfolk to cut Pentagon spending waste, of which there must be a lot, or else almost $2 trillion wouldn’t have gone missing in their last audit. I suppose evil folks (not just on the right, either!) will answer by intoning about the grave threats we face, but seriously, have the last 80 years all been an emergency? If so, then the folks running things were incompetent – and if not, the folks running things were just lying. Not a good look either way! So our Congressfolk need to know we oppose throwing away our tax dollars.
Finally, Demand Progress helps you tell your Congressfolk to reject any Republican effort to repeal our Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s recent cap on credit card late fees. Being objectively pro-usury isn’t good politics, yet Republicans yammer on about “regulatory overreach” (it’s “overreach” to save Americans money?) and “Americans believe debts need to be repaid,” a.k.a. “Americans support sex, therefore they also support bestiality.” Or, less abstractly, “Americans support trade, therefore they also support ‘free’ trade agreements.” Fools get too much say about everything, but if we don’t want that, we have to speak up.
