Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and reject any legislation that would create a “fiscal commission” for Social Security and/or Medicare. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Common Cause helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This bill would restore our Justice Department’s ability to pre-clear election law changes from any state or locality that has demonstrated a pattern of vote suppression – which answers our Supreme Court’s ruling that the old pre-clearance formula from the Voting Rights Act discriminated against Southern states. That’s a little like saying laws against burglary discriminate against burglars! Anyway, this bill would actually improve on the Voting Rights Act, so Congress should pass it.
The Alliance for Retired Americans helps you tell your Congressfolk to reject any “fiscal commission” legislation for Social Security and/or Medicare. Want to make Social Security better? Start taxing income above $168,600 and then hike benefits! Want to make Medicare better? Tax corporations what they’re paying for private health insurance and then admit all Americans into the system! All of that is much better, than empowering some special “commission” to cut our benefits without the scrutiny of debate. If that was such a great idea, they wouldn’t have to do it while we’re not looking!
