Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to end warrantless government spying, give SSI recipients the breathing room they deserve, and protect our privacy online. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Demand Progress helps you tell your Congressfolk to reject any attempt to expand Section 702 of the USA PATRIOT Act. That’s the section that lets our government spy on us without getting a warrant first; if they’d get a warrant first, we wouldn’t object. It’s that simple! But our government can’t even be bothered to do the thing they’ve been doing for over 200 years, and of course our House has lately tried to hold a “secret session” to discuss this very topic. Why? Because if they talked about crushing our freedoms in public, we’d object! Congressfolk can’t hide behind the “war on terror,” either. Everyone knows by now that most terror in America is home-grown.
The Coalition on Human Needs helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, which would update the asset limits for SSI recipients for the first time in decades. Because $2,000 ain’t hardly anything anymore! You can burn through $2,000 in a New York minute! And note well that if SSI asset limits had been indexed to inflation in the first place, they’d be about where the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act puts them: $10,000 for single folks (and $20,000 for married couples). So definitely don’t let right-wingers BS you with slippery-slope arguments.
Finally, Free Press helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass vigorous online privacy legislation that protects good Americans from private data-collecting corporations, including social media corporations. Recall that our FCC enacted good online privacy rules in 2016 – rules that would have prevented big corporations from collecting and selling your data unless you opted in to that, which was much better than letting corporations letting you opt out of it – but of course Republicans couldn’t wait to repeal them in 2017. Have they changed their minds? Ha ha ha they don’t have minds, they just do what their big donors tell them to do. Unless, of course, we speak out.
