Long story short: tell WalMart to get antibiotic abuse out of its meats, tell our FTC to ensure we can get printer ink a lot more cheaply, and tell our EPA to enact the most vigorous carbon emissions rules possible. Use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs to communicate your will.
USPIRG helps you tell WalMart to get antibiotic abuse out of its meat supply chain. Why WalMart? Because it sells about half the groceries in America, that’s why! And getting it to root out the antibiotic abuse from the meat it sells would go a long way toward ending antibiotic abuse in America. Recall that seven out of every 10 antibiotics go, no, not to sick people or sick animals, but to nominally healthy feed animals, partly to fatten them up and partly to help them endure their squalid living conditions, and if we abuse antibiotics like that, we might as well put a welcome mat out for the next generation of superbugs. So how about we make antibiotics effective again?
PennPIRG helps you tell our Federal Trade Commission (or FTC) to break the big computer corporations’ iron grip on printer ink. You’d save big bucks using generic printer cartridges rather than the proprietary ones computer corporations bully you into buying, and while their scam certainly operates on a smaller scale than health insurance or cable TV, it’s the same awful principle. Our FTC has done good work, which is why Republicans call FTC Chair Lina Khan a “socialist,” but we should still treat all government agencies as though they’ll only act if we tell them to – because if they don’t, they’ll find (as they did during the Trump years) that it’s actually against the law to simply ignore public comments.
Finally, the League of Conservation Voters helps you tell our Environmental Protection Agency (or EPA) to enact the most vigorous carbon emissions rules possible. Our EPA has finally proposed limiting carbon emissions from existing plants as well as new ones, and that is, as a famous philosopher would say, a BFD. But of course the big fossil fuel corporations doing the polluting will get a lot of oxygen, so to speak, for their rubbish arguments. Waaaah it’ll kill jobs! Waaaah it’ll drive prices up! Actually these rules create jobs for folks who help implement them, and raising prices is to a large degree up to the corporation selling the service, but you know, when you can’t win arguments, just cry a river. Hey, right-wingers do it all the time.
