Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to expand Medicare to include all Americans and outlaw ownership or trade of stocks by members of Congress. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
National Nurses United helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass Medicare-for-All legislation. And yes, you can not only pay for it – by harvesting the money big corporations already pay private health insurers with an employer-side payroll tax – but you can cover everyone! Even after the Affordable Care Act addressed these matters, we’re still paying for executive salaries and hedge fund-provoked surprise bills and the stock prices über alles corporate attitude; cut all that out and we’ll cover many more people. Don’t let your friends complain about “bureaucrats running everything,” because better a government bureaucrat, one you can shame into doing better, than a corporate one over whom you have no control.
Daily Kos helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass legislation outlawing them from owning or trading individual stocks. Even some Republicans are making happy noises about getting this done in this Congress, and though we shouldn’t substitute hope for work, we should note that nobody expected the Postal Service Reform Act to get done last year, either. Certainly everyone in Congress knows that the folks at home already think they’re corrupt as hell, and that Congressfolk owning stock in corporations they might have to oversee at some point is an invitation to further corruption. Still, we should make sure they get this done.
