Long story short: tell our EPA to stop carbon capture foolishness, tell Target to stop cowing to right-wing bullies over pride merchandise, and tell our CFPB to regulate data brokers to the fullest extent of the law. Use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs to communicate your will.
Food and Water Watch helps you tell our Environmental Protection Agency (or EPA) to reject corporate carbon capture shenanigans. Carbon capture sounds like a way to deal with climate change, but so does nuclear power, and like nuclear power, carbon capture has a long record of failing to do what corporatists say it does – it allows big fossil fuel corporations to squeeze more usable energy from fossil fuels, sure, but that’s no substitute for the renewable energies that already cut climate change. We should be doing more of that, and doing less helping big fossil fuel corporations to pretend they’re doing more than they’re doing. Yeah, it’s hard to transition to renewables, but is America the can-do country or isn’t it? We all have to answer that question sooner or later.
UltraViolet helps you tell Target to stop cowing to right-wing bullies over pride-related merchandise. Now you may well ask: why do we care what Target does? We don’t do it for Target’s soul, not least because Target is a thing without a soul; we do it to demonstrate to the world that bigots don’t surround us – we surround them. Too many decision-makers, be they on school boards or in corporate boardrooms, let themselves be taken hostage to one or two bigoted complaints, and that’s when we must raise a million voices at once and deliver lonely bigots to the oblivion they deserve. Right-wingers think they own the Big Stick of Bad PR, but they’re as wrong about that as they are about everything else.
Finally, Stop Data Brokers helps you tell our Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (or CFPB) to write the most vigorous rules possible preventing data brokers from abusing us. Data brokers have been buying and selling our personal information for over a decade and our government has done nothing about it. But when data brokers get to do whatever they like, bad things happen, like domestic violence victims suddenly finding their new address out there, or police officers buying up your data to go on fishing expeditions without a warrant. Maybe our CFPB (whose purview is basically financial in nature) isn’t the best agency to rein in data brokers, but I’m sure they can do some good – if we speak out.
