Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to reject the FAIR Tax, lift the Social Security payroll tax cap, and end Medicare privatization. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Americans for Tax Fairness helps you tell your Congressfolk to reject the so-called FAIR Tax, which would replace income and corporate taxes with a single, national 30% sales tax. Remember when inflation was 9% not that long ago? Now think of the FAIR Tax as 30% inflation. Better yet, think of it as 60% inflation, since the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy says the tax would have to be that big to make up for all the lost income and corporate tax revenue. Hate to pile on, but rich people who don’t spend as much of their money as you do will make out like bandits. So let’s put yet another stupid idea in the ground.
Demand Progress helps youtell your Congressfolk to lift the payroll tax cap on Social Security, so that Social Security can tax income above $162,000 annually. And Jesus Mary and Joseph no more bullshit about Social Security being an “entitlement” or how it’s “running out of money,” particularly when we can alleviate any future money problems by taxing more of rich folks’ income into the system. With even Joe Manchin making pleasing noises about the concept, we should note that this could be done though budget reconciliation – if not with this House of Clowns, then with a Democratic House starting in 2025. They’ll have to hold onto the Senate, too, but everything worth doing in life is hard.
Finally, People’s Action helps you tell your Congressfolk to end Medicare privatization. OK, the way they put it is “tell Congress to stop Medicare profiteers,” but “profiteer” is a good enough word for private health insurance corporations that work through so-called Medicare Advantage, particularly since we’ve heard so many news reports lately of Medicare Advantage not paying for services. Indeed, not only does Medicare “Advantage” kick a lot of sick seniors off their health care plans, but a lot of folks switch back to traditional Medicare in their last year of life. They say “older and wiser” for a reason, apparently! But us younger folk can sure do a better job taking care of our elders.
