Long story short: tell our FCC to force big internet telecoms to spell out what we’re paying and what we’re paying for, tell our Department of the Interior to roll back Trump-era damage to the Endangered Species Act, and tell our Department of Labor to end corporate "misclassification" of workers. Use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs to communicate your will.
Consumer Reports helps you tell our Federal Communications Commission (or FCC) to force big telecom corporations to spell out exactly what you’re paying for when you buy their service. Consumer Reports advocates a sort of "broadband nutrition label" that would include such information as the cost of activation and early termination fees, upload and download speeds, and privacy protections, and that'd be a very good place to start. And the only people who could possibly oppose such a thing are a) big telecom CEOs looking to make even more money they haven't earned and b) right-wing government-is-always-bad types; haven’t we let them have enough of the say about everything for one lifetime?
The Center for Biological Diversity helps you tell our Department of the Interior to restore protections offered by the Endangered Species Act. The Trump Administration, as you know, crippled the Act, by forcing Interior to foreground corporate profits, ignore climate change, and slash protections for threatened species (so they don’t become endangered, amirite?) during legally-mandated rulemaking. And sadly, the Biden Administration has dragged its feet on the matter, recently insisting they need another two years to fix the problem. But by writing our Department of Interior, we can at least keep the issue in front of them, even if they’d prefer it goes away on its own.
Finally, Jobs With Justice helps you tell our Department of Labor to stop big corporations from simply classifying their full-time workers as “independent contractors.” They do it so they can deny full-time employees health care benefits, pension benefits, unemployment benefits, and overtime pay – among other rights employees have fought and died to earn! One 2020 study suggested that corporations have “misclassified” somewhere between 10 and 30 percent of all employees as “contractors”; one can raise an eyebrow over the wide range in the finding, but the fact is, one person denied their rights under our laws is too many.
