Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to protect Social Security and Medicare, approve additional food assistance spending, and pass a Billionaires’ Mininum Income Tax. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Demand Progress helps you tell your Congressfolk to protect Social Security and Medicare. From whom? From Republicans, of course, who have actually come out and said that if they take either or both houses of Congress next week, they’ll take the debt limit hostage again so they can force benefit cuts to Social Security and Medicare. You know, as opposed to the Medicare cost cuts Democrats passed in the Inflation Reduction Act, the same cost cuts Republicans are trying to portray as benefit cuts! They really do live in an up-is-down world, but if they take either or both houses of Congress, they’ll try to force us to live in that world, too. And that’s why we communicate our will early and often.
Daily Kos helps you tell your Congressfolk to approve the $100 million they’ve already authorized for the Emergency Food Assistance Program, which, as its name suggests, helps working families who can’t get enough food from our “free” market. Don’t fall prey to “this program only helps Those People” horsedoodle, because you could be one of “those people” at any time if you lose your job. Politicians keep acting like programs taxpayers pay for could never help them. Gosh, I wonder why that is. And by “I wonder why that is” I mean “they mean to keep voters in a feedback loop of masturbatory rage as they pick their pockets.”
Finally, Patriotic Millionaires helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass a Billionaire’s Minimum Income Tax. From spring 2020 to spring 2022, billionaires’ net worth increased 70% – did your net worth increase 70% during that time? No, it more likely went down, since you were more likely out of work at the beginning of that time! And sadly, while all that extra money doesn’t buy happiness, it sure does buy politicians (cough Kyrsten Sinema cough) who’ll let them pay less in taxes than working families do. You want to know what else it could buy? Programs we all benefit from even if we don’t actually fall on hard times.
