Sen. Schumer (D-NY) excoriates OPEC+ for deciding to ratchet back oil production, which has already helped drive American gas prices up, and though he concentrates most of his fire on how this move affects Russia’s war on Ukraine – which is not going so well for Russia, you may have noticed! – I can’t help but notice that we’re less than a month out from midterms here, and higher gas prices won’t help Democrats hold either House or Senate. Republicans could help out, I suppose, by excoriating President Biden for failing to get better behavior out of Saudi Arabia when he went there over the summer, which sets up the easy retort: so you’re saying we’re not appeasing Saudi Arabia enough?
I wish it were more of a surprise that celebrity chef/philanthropist José Andrés has tried to block an initiative that would raise wages for tipped workers in Washington, D.C., his base of operations, but I’ve seen nominally liberal restauranteurs do similar things before, and a lot nominally liberal bosses in any field clench when their own employees demand better from them. But this is one reason we live in communities – so that we have folks who can grab us by the scruff and tell us we’re going wrong. (Don’t believe the hype that Mr. Andrés et al are “just trying to preserve jobs in the wake of the pandemic.” First off, it’s rubbish, and second off, if they didn’t say that, they’d just say something else.)
Once again, from the “I Shouldn’t Have to Spend Any Time on This Shit” file: per Factcheck.org, “(t)here is no evidence that babies are harmed by drinking breast milk from mothers who have received a COVID-19 vaccine.” You may have heard differently on social media – that, for example, a study found that “7 out of 11 women had mRNA in their breast milk.” Generally you don’t hear that a) it was actually 5 women out of 11 and b) it was an infinitesimal amount of mRNA that disappeared in less than 48 hours. Also too, 11 women ain’t exactly a big sample, and if you’re a mom, do you really want to put yourself at risk of dying from COVID by not getting vaccinated? Thus we are reminded, once again, that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and also that clichés often endure for good reason.
Many have wondered just why Mehmet Oz gave a speech at a Florida fundraiser not very far from one of Adolf Hitler's cars, and I suppose right-wingers will shrug and say “it was a museum,” I think Mr. Oz once again is actually looking to appeal to fascists in Pennsylvania, just like he did when he criticized John Fetterman for being too anti-authority. But I’m not sure that’ll work – only a few American fascists really like Hitler, and those can easily make a show of hating him. Remember what Richard Spencer was talking about right before he got punched in the face that time? He was talking about how much actual Nazis hated him. Fake “independence” continues to disgust me.
Uh oh: New Hampshire Senate Republican candidate Don Bolduc unfurled this gem about “who should decide abortion rights”: “It belongs to the state. It belongs to these gentlemen right here, who are state legislators representing you.” While New Hampshire doesn’t allow state-level ballot referenda, legislators don’t “decide for you” so much as do your will, or at least that’s how it’ll work when we all insist that’s how it should work. And if you’re running for office, the last thing you want say is any variation of these men decide abortion for you. Between this and his flip-flip-flopping on the 2020 election being “stolen,” Mr. Bolduc’s not having a good month, and this is not a good time to have a bad month.
When I hear that well over half of all Republican nominees for House, Senate, and the four top state offices think Joe Biden “stole” the 2020 election he actually won by seven million votes, I think Democrats should absolutely run ads about all of them, so that independent voters know who the whiner is and who the adult in the room is. That way we can prevent a good chunk of them – perhaps even those running in “safely Republican seats,” since we all know that can turn in a minute since we’ve all seen it happen in our lifetimes – from ever holding office. I still have my doubts that Democrats really want to win races, though – I mean, why take on actual responsibilities when you can raise lots of money either way?
Finally, President Biden issues pardons for all Americans convicted of simple marijuana possession since that became a crime in 1971, and orders a study on descheduling marijuana, adding that keeping pot on Schedule I along with drugs like heroin “makes no sense.” Only around 10,000 Americans will get pardons – if your state rung you up for pot possession, you’d need to go to your Governor for a pardon – but this is all more than I expected from President Biden, even though he said he’d do that and more, so I applaud it. I feel compelled to point out, though, that (like his student loan forgiveness program) it’s also exactly the kind of good first step that shouldn’t attract a lot of Republican anger but does anyway, because Republicans only do anger these days. Plus they’re all running on TEH CRIMEZ!!!!, because what else can they run on, their great ideas? The good news: most Americans want to legalize pot, and they don’t automatically associate toking with murder.
