Long story short: tell your state legislators to create ranked-choice voting in your state, and tell your Congressfolk to pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and reform our credit reporting system. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Roots Action helps you tell your state legislators to create a ranked choice voting system in your state. Maine and Alaska use it, so now third-party candidates no longer create openings for right-wing ogres (cough Paul LePage cough) to win elections. Right-wingers no doubt cite that as a reason not to use this system, and indeed, I haven’t heard a single coherent argument against it. Ranked-choice voting – in which you have to essentially seed candidates in order of preference – not only ensures that independent candidates can run and win, but also ensures that the two major parties can’t use independents to defeat the other guy. I think that’s something we can all get behind.
Moms Rising helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass H.R. 1085/S. 1486, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act. We’ve gone over how the PWFA doesn’t “make it impossible for bosses to manage their workers,” but I have neglected to mention that the bill would protect all female workers who could get pregnant, by preventing bosses from making workers miserable if they get pregnant after being hired. A woman of child-bearing age could get pregnant at any time, but that doesn’t mean they suddenly lose all the skills and qualifications that got them hired in the first place! Sadly, too many bosses act like it does, because they’re not up to dealing with challenges. But they shouldn’t get all the say about everything.
Finally, the Daily Kos Liberation League helps you tell your Congressfolk to overhaul our credit reporting system. Why? So that it doesn’t make so many mistakes, so credit agencies can’t let identity thieves steal your personal data, and so credit reporting doesn’t allow historical racism to keep crushing Black and Brown folks! Our private credit reporting corporations do all of that, and we just put up with it, thinking there’s no other way. Of course, there is another way: a public credit reporting agency, accountable to the American people, competing with the private ones! Now let’s watch the big credit reporting corporations soil their shorts.
