Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to pass the Respect for Marriage Act and increase Social Security benefits by raising taxes on the rich. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your Congressfolk's phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Daily Kos helps you tell your Senators to pass H.R. 8404/S. 4556, the Respect for Marriage Act, which would protect gay and interracial marriage from any more damage our Supreme Court is contemplating. Daily Kos also helps you tell Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to bring up the Respect for Marriage Act for a full Senate vote in the first place. I can see some benefit to waiting until you “have the votes” to hold the vote, but I can see no benefit to waiting forever for recalcitrant Senators who’ll never come around. So sooner or later good Americans will need to see which side their Senators are on, and a vote’s the only way for us to do that.
Civic Shout helps you tell your Congressfolk to increase Social Security benefits for our seniors, and pay for it by raising taxes on the rich. Turns out a Data for Progress survey has found that 76 percent of Americans support this very program, and Newt Gingrich always said that if 70 percent of Americans want something, they ought to get it. I’m sure he’d have some lame excuse for not doing it, but next time you hear some “liberal” media punditoid argue that ZOMG SOSHUL SECURITIEZ IZ ABOUTZ TO DIEZ WE NEEDZ TO CUTZ TEH BENEFITZ AND PRIVATIZEZ ITZ!!!!!, you can remember that three quarters of Americans want to increase benefits and tax the rich harder to pay for it.
