Long story short: tell your Congressfolk to pass the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, and the Women's Health Protection Act, cut defense spending, and end the filibuster. Use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page) to find your legislators' phone numbers and/or use the email/petition tools in the following paragraphs.
Both Left Action and Daily Kos help you tell your Congressfolk to pass S. 2747, the Freedom to Vote Act. The Freedom to Vote Act would authorize early voting for 15 days in all states, enact same-day voter registration, make Election Day a national holiday, clamp down on partisan gerrymandering, restore ex-felons' voting rights, and restrict dark money campaign contributions, plus it would prevent states from interfering in elections so that a particularly party (cough Republicans cough) can "win" elections when their candidates get fewer votes. You know, like Donald Trump tried to do after he lost the 2020 Presidential election by seven million votes. Pass the Freedom to Vote Act, and we can better keep the unworthy from office. We just had a four-year seminar in what the unworthy are like, and I ain't going back.
Both Daily Kos and People for the American Way help you tell your Senators to pass H.R. 4, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The bill would restore our Justice Department's ability to block state or locality voting rights law changes, in those states and localities that have demonstrated a pattern of vote suppression. That means (among other things) fewer state laws making it impossible to mail in or drop off a ballot, and fewer closed polling places in Black and brown neighborhoods. Yeah, states do this all the time, and though we saw as early as the 2020 Georgia Presidential primary that folks will wait in line all day to vote, why make them? Right-wingers love saying "voting should be hard." What they mean is winning should be easy -- for them. But they should earn victory like the rest of us do.
Daily Kos helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass H.R. 3755/S. 1975, the Women's Health Protection Act. Our Supreme Court refused once again to stop Texas's notorious SB 8 -- which gives literally anyone the right to sue over an abortion, since determining "injury in fact" per our Courts' ruling in Lujan v. Defenders of Wildlife is, apparently, something only "losers" do -- so that means we have to pass legislation at the federal level. We can't count on our Supreme Court keeping Roe v. Wade around, either; I still think they'll strike down Texas's law, for the reason I described above, but other, more direct challenges may give them the opportunity they obviously desire. Unless, of course, we pass the Women's Health Protection Act first.
Peace Action helps you tell your Congressfolk to cut defense spending in the upcoming defense appropriations bill. President Biden is the umpteenth President in a row to propose increasing defense spending; has that made any right-wingers like him better? I kid, of course -- being a right-winger, today, is all about masturbatory rage, not about assessing situations as they are. But I feel compelled to mention, once again, that we spend more money on "defense" than the next eight nations on that list combined, and yet politicians still tell us WE'RE NOT TEH SAFEZ!!!!!! You have to wonder, also, when we can't turn Afghanistan around in 20 years, whether we're spending "defense" money on the right things. Maybe we're just spending it on expensive things.
Finally, Daily Kos helps you tell your Senators to end the filibuster. Mitch McConnell actually has the gall to say if you don't like the filibuster you should win arguments, when the filibuster is a crutch for people who can't win arguments. And Republicans now use it, or the threat of it, against anything that might help the American people, and annoying as Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin have been, the only reason they matter right now is that Republicans say no to everything -- why, they've even filibustered taking tax breaks away from corporations that outsource jobs! How do you filibuster that? And when you abuse a tool, we have to take that tool away, or else we just become hostages.
