Myanmar's military seize power in coup, detaining democratically-elected leaders including Nobel laureate and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. You may be tempted to think that, ah, given recent events in our Capitol last month, Republicans would pause before saying very much about a military coup arising over alleged election fraud, but then you remember that nothing gives Republicans pause, and they're no doubt blaming all of this on Joe Biden as we speak. He was Vice President for eight years, what did he do? Seriously, I don't even need to check.
The Philadelphia Inquirer removed comment sections from all but some of its sports articles on Monday, for the following reason: "(c)ommenting on Inquirer.com was long ago hijacked by a small group of trolls who traffic in racism, misogyny, and homophobia. This group comprises a tiny fraction of the Inquirer.com audience. But its impact is disproportionate and enduring." In other words, assholes ruin everything, and though I wouldn't dismiss the idea that paid moderators could make it better, I also think we have many other ways to express ourselves than internet comment sections. Folks remember letters to the editor, right? Or blogs? Or email?
Another year, another record-setting year of profits for Netflix in which the streaming corporation paid almost nothing in corporate income taxes. Didn't they say lower corporate taxes would reduce tax avoidance and prevent corporations from going overseas? I may never have heard anything more false in my lifetime, and I hear a lot of false things these days, as I'm sure you do, too. Seriously, bring the 55% corporate tax rate back. It can't possibly do more harm than corporations do now that they're so "free" from the "burden" of taxation.
"Dozens" of Bush Mobb officials are leaving the Republican Party because they think it's become a cult of personality. They're right, of course, but (at the risk of beating a dead horse) these are still the same people who either called us traitor for opposing the Iraq war or did nothing while other people called us traitor, and I don't see any evidence that they feel any remorse over it. And George W. Bush had his little cult of personality, too. No, I think the RNC Chair is right, that the party's having a little "spat" and they'll "come together" again -- and now with even more crazy!
Finally, around four dozen protestors in Los Angeles shut down COVID vaccine distribution at Dodger Stadium for about an hour. Organizers apparently told protestors to "please refrain from wearing Trump/MAGA attire as we want our statement to resonate with the sheeple," and what helps you connect with folks better than calling them "sheeple"? Seriously, this is yet another reminder that right-wingers aren't about "freedom of choice": they're about their freedom of choice overruling your freedom of choice. In other words, they're fascists.
