Once again we will call our Senators and tell them to pass H.R. 6800, the HEROES Act. Doesn't matter that they're not in session right now; doesn't matter that they all think they have more important things to do (like ram a right-wing Supreme Court Justice down our throats before we notice it); doesn't matter that Nancy Pelosi was just trying to pass a slimmed-down HEROES Act in order to "get something done." The HEROES Act is still the best COVID-19 relief bill either House of Congress has passed, and the race ain't even close. The CARES Act gave out over half a trillion dollars in corporate welfare, but the HEROES Act would actually fund COVID testing and tracing, enhanced unemployment benefits, relief for strapped states and municipalities, and relief for a strapped Postal Service (among other good works). Doesn't matter that Ms. Pelosi was negotiating with Treasury Secretary Mnuchin, either -- they should only be negotiating with us. And the more we communicate our will, the more they'll finally get that. Really, they can't see the Mitch McConnell Way as anything but desperate. And where's he been in these negotiations, anyway?
Meanwhile, Facebook has been giving itself high-fives for "cracking down" on noxious Nazi-wannabe content at its platform, but, yeah, that's a crock, and you don't even have to know that Facebook got over 400 warnings about the Nazi wannabe groups organizing their "response" to Kenosha protests (that "response" included the Kyle Rittenhouse shootings) to know that. Whistleblowers have complained to our SEC that Facebook still helps Nazi wannabe groups by using algorithms to auto-generate pages that promote white supremacy; imagine if Random House "auto-generated" hundreds of different Turner Diaries rip-offs and you begin to see the problem. I make the publishing house analogy, again, because our laws should treat Facebook as a publishing house -- albeit one that can publish private utterances that must be exempt from social platform scrutiny -- and people still complain this is a "free speech" issue. But how can it be a free speech issue if some algorithm does the "speaking"? Hence the National Whistleblower Center helps you tell our government to hold Facebook accountable for lying about its "crackdowns."
Finally, Daily Kos helps you tell your Congressfolk to pass H.R. 1692/S. 758, the EACH Woman Act, which would (finally!) allow federal funding of abortions. Our Supreme Court may soon be so constituted as to strike down Roe v. Wade at the first opportunity, and while no one ever wants to see a fetus aborted, the alternative -- a society that uses women as breeders -- is far worse. No, really, those are our two choices: a society that legalizes abortion, or a society where women can be controlled through pregnancy, this latter option a stated preference of many right-wingers; the former is the lesser evil, and we can mitigate that evil more easily than if (as with Prohibition) we make it illegal and more well-off folks still break the law with impunity. We mitigate the evil with safe and affordable birth control -- which, naturally, our right-wingers also vehemently oppose. But birth control is a civilized option, unless, I guess, you think the 40 million or so sperm from every ejaculation that don't ovulate also deserve more chances.
