Congress comes back to work today, so take a minute to boo them, and then get on the phone with your Senators and tell them to pass both H.R. 6800, the HEROES Act, and H.R. 8015, the Delivering for America Act. You've heard that "Democrats blocked the Republican pandemic stimulus bill"? Well, that sure ain't the whole story, since our House passed the HEROES Act, a pretty good pandemic stimulus bill, over three months ago. It funds testing and tracing, extends enhanced unemployment benefits, and issues another round of stimulus checks, among other good works -- but it doesn't make three-martini lunches fully tax-deductible, which is apparently a sticking point with Republicans. I wish I were kidding about that! Our House has also passed the Delivering for America Act, which would reverse all the stupid changes our new Postmaster General has made to our Post Office so it'll run a lot worse than it currently does. If Senate Republicans won't do the work we've called them to do, well, we've got to keep calling them -- for as long as it takes. Tools for finding your Senators' phone numbers are, as always, in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or, if you're on a cellphone, the bottom of this page).
Meanwhile, our Supreme Court struck down our President's clumsily unlawful attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (or DACA) program -- hate to pile on, but our Court called our President's actions "arbitrary and capricious," and it must have pained the notoriously literal John Roberts to say that -- but our U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (or USCIS) still won't accept new DACA applicants, in open defiance of our Court's ruling. How likely is it that our Administration just can't find any folks who came here as children who just don't meet DACA's criteria? Our USCIS also plans to renew existing DACA statuses for only one year instead of two, just to make DREAMers' lives harder. They already wouldn't recognize the countries to which they'd be deported, and had literally no choice in coming here, so I guess our Administration says what's a little more cruelty? Hence the Daily Kos Liberation League helps you tell our Administration to stop defying the rule of law and accept DACA applicants again. Shame we have to tell this Administration to follow the law, but such is our lot in life.
On a related topic, Daily Kos helps you tell your Senators to reject the nomination of Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf to be that department's permanent Secretary. As "permanent" as such things are with this Administration, amirite? Our President loves circumventing the rule of law by appointing "acting" department heads -- and according to our Government Accountability Office (or GAO), he doesn't even do it lawfully, bypassing less "loyal" civil servants to elevate the ones he wants. And this is quite telling, since Republicans have held the Senate during this entire Administration, and have eagerly rubber-stamped his judicial nominees, for example. But Mr. Wolf has thoroughly demonstrated his unworthiness for the job over the last nine-plus months, perhaps most notably by sending unmarked and armed officers to protests and abducting protestors off the street. Perhaps one day he'll find out what everyone else finds out -- that slavish loyalty to our President rarely goes unpunished. But why wait? His spiritual arc is no more important than anyone else's, and certainly no more important than the people's will, which we ought to express posthaste.
Finally, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Congressfolk to pass H.R. 8020/S. 4490, the Make Billionaires Pay Act, then Americans for Tax Fairness still helps you do that. We all know by now that the biggest "winners" of this pandemic have been billionaires, whose wealth has grown by at least $732 billion over the last six months, and while you may be tempted to say right-place-right-time about Jeff Bezos (since ordering stuff online has become even more of a lifeline for good Americans than it was before), fact is billionaires don't need that damn much money. No, they don't "create jobs" with that money -- they hoard that money! Just like you or I would do! That's why we have laws to compel them to part with some of that money, and the Make Billionaires Pay Act would hardly make any of them destitute -- it'd put a 60% tax of billionaire wealth earned since March, which would leave 40%, and as we know, 40% of a crapload is still a crapload. The bill would redirect the money toward good Americans' out-of-pocket health care expenses -- which we know have shot up, because tens of millions of Americans lost their jobs (and thus any health insurance they might have had). So let's get to it.
