Happy Wednesday, good peoples! Now call your Senators and tell them to pass tell them to pass H.R. 1, the For the People Act; H.R. 3, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act; H.R. 4, the Voting Rights Advancement Act; H.R. 5, the Equality Act; H.R. 6, the American Dream and Promise Act; H.R. 7, the Paycheck Fairness Act; H.R. 51, the Washington, D.C. Admission Act; H.R. 397, the Butch Lewis Act; H.R. 535, the PFAS Action Act; H.R. 582, the Raise the Wage Act; H.R. 986, the Protecting Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions Act; H.R. 1146, the Arctic Cultural and Coastal Plain Protection Act; H.R. 1373, the Grand Canyon Centennial Act; H.R. 1644, the Save the Internet Act; H.R. 2474, the PRO Act; H.R. 2513, the Corporate Transparency Act; H.R. 2722, the SAFE Act; H.R. 5035, the Television Viewer Protection Act; H.R. 7120, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act; and H.J. Res. 79, which would remove the expiration date from the original Equal Rights Amendment. It's July already, I know, and the best time for the Senate to pass these bills was last year. But the second-best time for them to pass these bills is now.
Meanwhile, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Congressfolk to mandate that any and all publicly-funded COVID-19 vaccines be available to everyone, then Americans for Tax Fairness still helps you do that. Because if your taxpayer money funded the vaccine, you should benefit from it -- and, by the way, that's most drugs, not just a future COVID-19 vaccine Congress has allocated $10 billion on just this year. That's $10 billion of our money, folks! You don't think Congress just gets lucky at the casino, do you? And yet our Great and Glorious True American Administration says they can't guarantee we'll all be able to get it, because we need private corporations to do the work and they "deserve" to make whatever profit they see fit. They have the relationship exactly wrong: we don't need them to do the work; they need us to give them the work. And frankly, if we did the work ourselves -- that is, if our government hired the scientists and paid them to do the research -- we'd have a cheaper vaccine more quickly.
Finally, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell our Fish and Wildlife Service to reject bear-baiting in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, then the Sierra Club still helps you do that. Imagine people actually thinking they're TEH GREATEZTZ HUNTURZ EVAHZ!!!!! if they can lure a bear out of its den with jelly cream donuts and then shoot them dead! How sporting is that? And why should civilized people allow it? There lies the rub, of course: this Administration loathes civilization, because civilization prevents us from giving in to every conceivable impulse -- and impulse control sure is a problem with this President! And civilization also reminds us that there is not only a past but also a future; but for this Administration, the past only exists to put women and folks of color in their "place," and the future only impedes the mad drive to make money today. But those of us who value civilization will work for it, even if our politicians don't.
