Happy Tuesday, good folks! Now call your Senators and tell them to pass H.R. 6800, the HEROES Act. Your Senators do not need to reinvent the wheel here -- the HEROES Act already would extend unemployment benefits, already would give extra funding to states and municipalities, already would fund our Post Office through the end of the year, already would fund contract tracing so we can track the spread of COVID-19 better, already would expand working family tax cuts, already would repeal one big hedge-fund manager tax cut, and already would provide another stimulus checks to folks making less than six figures (plus it'd be a bigger check than the one the CARES Act cut for you). Our economy may have added close to five million jobs in June, but we still have over 11 percent U3 unemployment (18 percent by the more informative U6 rate, which picks up data the U3 rate doesn't), and the spike in COVID-19 cases lately, well, doesn't exactly predict continued expansion. So let's make sure our Senators do the right thing.
Meanwhile, you've no doubt heard that Russian officials paid bounties to Afghan rebels for killing American soldiers -- and, of course, our intelligence agencies told our President this in a Presidential Daily Briefing several months ago, which is most assuredly not called that because it's a thousand pages long and full of irrelevant data. It sure does seem like our President has a blind spot when it comes to Russia, but still, you'd think he'd be angrier about a foreign nation paying people to kill our soldiers. Alas, he expends all his anger these days on liberals who "shame" right-wingers for their bad behavior. Gosh, we finally get it through our heads that we're not too good for shaming and we're still wrong! It's like right-wingers will never be happy with us! Anyway, Secure Families Initiative helps you tell your Congressfolk to investigate the matter and punish the wrongdoers. We shouldn't fight wars like the Afghanistan war in the first place, but we shouldn't tolerate this offense, either.
Finally, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Congressfolk to stop corporations' abuse of the CARES Act's small business relief fund by passing H.R. 7076/S. 3855, the CORE Act, then Daily Kos still helps you do that. Imagine our government establishing a "Paycheck Protection Program," ostensibly to help small businesses continue to meet payroll during this pandemic, but then essentially giving away $500 billion of our money to banksters, which then handed out big chunks of taxpayer cash to their big corporate cronies. But wait, there's more! Now imagine our President getting rid of all the Inspectors General who might have actually overseen this program so it didn't become a big corporate welfare trough, and then imagine our government asserting that the people can't see which corporations got PPP money because such information is "proprietary" and "confidential." Sadly, you don't even have to imagine it -- it all happened. So we must stop it.
