After getting in so much trouble with the American people for its "zero-tolerance" family separation policy, our Administration has proposed a fix to the problem -- by essentially terminating the Flores settlement that keeps our government from separating immigrant children from their parents in the first place! Then it'll be Super Happy Indefinite Detainment Fun Time Land in America again! But since our Administration's plan involves the Department of Homeland (sic) Security (sic) and the Department of Health and Human Services to issue new regulations, they must take comments from the public on the matter before moving forward -- which I'm sure angers them! -- so the ACLU helps you tell our Administration not to terminate the Flores agreement with new regulations. We have until November 6 to leave comments; as fate would have it, November 6 is also Election Day. Leave your comment now and you won't have to worry about doing both on the same day.
Meanwhile, Joann Burrows, of Yonkers, NY, has begun a petition on Change.org which helps you tell the Bronx Zoo to release an elephant named Happy to an elephant sanctuary. Why? Because the Zoo currently has Happy in a form of solitary confinement, after two newly-acquired elephants charged at her lifelong roommate (named Grumpy) and killed him in 2002, and her next roommate, named Sammy, passed in 2006. The Zoo decided at that point not to acquire any more elephants, which left Happy all alone, since they weren't going to have her live with the two elephants who killed Grumpy. But elephants need to be social, and Happy can't be, now -- the Zoo says she has "tactile and auditory contact" with the two elephants with whom she doesn't get along, but why would anyone think that's good enough? Better to find a place with other elephants for her. But they won't do it, of course, until we wield the Big Stick of Bad PR.
