If you haven't told your Senators to oppose the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, you can still use the tools in the upper right-hand corner of this page (or the bottom of this page, if you're viewing it on a cellphone) to find your Senators' phone numbers and call them. We know Judge Kavanaugh would reflexively put corporations above people, would support discrimination-because-Jesus, and would fight clean air and clean water regulations, but I suggest you put one reason front and center in your phone call to your Senators: that Judge Kavanaugh thinks a President should be immune from criminal prosecution while in office, because he's so busy. (Watching Fox News all day, apparently.) But we now have a President who might actually merit criminal prosecution, and we also have a President who expresses open admiraton for brutal dictator-wannabes like Messrs. Erdogan and Putin. Corruption and totalitarianism is already a bad mix, so why would we add "immunity from prosecution" to it?
Meanwhile, a group of good government organizations helps you tell Our Justice Department to investigate police killings of black folks as well as rates of police brutality against folks of color. We know our Justice Department doesn't feel the way we do, but duty is duty, in a world where white mass shooters seem easy to apprehend, but "carrying a cellphone while black" seems too often a capital crime. Our Justice Department has made noises about "supporting" local police departments, and being their "partner," but what kind of partner lets you do whatever you like no matter who gets hurt without consequences? And in what universe does "support" equal "jackboot lockstep agreement"? Only in universes that don't really value freedom, which is, sadly, the universe our current Administration seems to inhabit. Still, that's why we're here -- to bring them back to reality, where we live.
Finally, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Congressfolk to support S. 337, the FAMILY Act, then Moms Rising still helps you do that. We live in a time when mainstream Beltway opinion holds that we should cut Social Security benefits to pay for family leave benefits, but mainstream Beltway opinion is moronic as usual. That tax-cut-for-the-rich that we just passed? Repealing that could easily pay for the FAMILY Act, which would otherwise get its funding from a payroll tax of 0.4% -- which is to say, workers would pay 0.2% of their income and their employers would also pay 0.2% of those workers' income. That's two-tenths of one percent, not "two percent" or "20 percent," "liberal" media! We might as well do the math all the way: a worker making $50,000 would pay $100 annually for paid family medical leave insurance. $100! In an entire calendar year! When you confront numbers like that, I could forgive you for thinking our leaders are stupid. Or cowardly. Or greedy.
