As you likely know, S.J.Res. 59 is one of them-there "authorizations to use military force," like the one Congress passed after 9.11 -- except that S.J.Res. 59 would give our President a virtual blank check to wage war whenever and wherever without the Congressional approval our Constitution requires. And that's a bad idea! Our Constitution gives our President the power to wage war, not declare war, and talk about "not hamstringing the President to respond to threats" is precisely the opposite of the point: the Constitution aims to hamstring our President from ordering young folks to die! Thus Amnesty International helps you tell your Congressfolk to reject S.J.Res. 59. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee held hearings on S.J.Res. 59 two weeks ago, and still hasn't voted on the bill, but don't get complacent: they're just waiting until they think no one is watching to ram the damn thing through. So let's let them know we're watching them.
Meanwhile, the ACLU helps you tell our Customs and Border Protection officers to stop abusing children verbally, physically, and sexually. There are laws against that, you know! Even though these children are "only" undocumented immigrants! The ACLU uncovered some 30,000 pages of evidence of CBP abuse between 2009 and 2014 (at the risk of beating a dead horse, being "tough on illegal immigrants" got President Obama exactly zero love from the right!), abuse including food and water deprivation, threats of rape and death, and, of course, actual rape. No whining about how tough it is to be a CBP officer! If they can't stand the heat, they should get out of the kitchen! And if you can't help but abuse children, America shouldn't enable you! (In fairness, I do suspect CBP officers aren't paid enough, trained enough, or have enough decision-making power, but we can help them in these areas without tolerating abuse. That's what civilized people do.)
Meanwhile, you may have heard some police officers in Illinois and elsewhere oppose pot legalization because, get this, they'll have to euthanize all their pot-sniffing dogs if pot becomes legal. That's a nice two-for-one there -- rhetorical hostage-taking and threatened animal cruelty! Seriously, in what sick, immoral, and decadent society does keep the pot illegal or all the police dogs get it! represent serious, reasonable argument? I mean, in this sick, immoral, and decadent society, even tortured lab animals can be safely adopted as pets, so we should be able to help pot-sniffing dogs become valued members of a family somewhere. First step, of course, is to keep the state of Illinois from killing police dogs, which Amanda Quinonez has started a petition on Change.org to help you do. As for folks who'd continue to hold a gun to a dog's head in order to stand in the way of progress, may God have mercy on your immortal souls.
