U.S. District Judge blocks President Trump's transgendered soldier ban, at least until a lawsuit against the ban can be resolved. Well, Secretary Mattis must be breathing easier this week! It's also very possible that Mr. Trump himself couldn't care less whether his ban actually succeeds, but that fact is no cause for celebration, because it means he riled up all those right-wingers only so they can be riled up again by his failure. Is it too much to ask that our leaders stop ruling through failure? Civilized people deserve better, after all.
Trump Administration Chief of Staff John Kelly, in extolling the alleged virtues of keeping Confederate statues around, claims that the "lack of an ability to compromise" caused the Civil War. The good news? Our Glorious Elites have been trying to erase slavery as a cause of the Civil War almost since it happened; the fact that this effort has failed so miserably is almost as heartening as the fact that the New Testament, despite being written by monarchists, calls a man who cared about the poor the savior of humankind.
What's really wrong with Kevin Spacey's decision to come out as gay at the very same time he apologizes for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy in the late '80s, when Mr. Spacey himself was in his late 20s? What's really wrong is that homosexuality and pederasty aren't the same thing; in fact, they aren't even similar things, and by deciding to, I don't know, kill two birds with one stone I guess, Mr. Spacey has assisted the far right's ongoing program to suggest that homosexuality is as despicable as pederasty. Mr. Spacey would be appalled to think so, but it'd be no less true.
Ho hum, Virginia Republican gubernatorial nominee Ed Gillespie runs racist campaign, then whines when he gets called a racist. It's not like it's some great leap of logic from "runs racist ads" to "is racist himself." I sure hope this campaign permanently lays to rest the notion that Ed Gillespie -- who told Republicans in 2003 to call every criticism of George W. Bush "political hate speech" -- is some kind of "moderate," or "civilized person." (I also hope he loses his race, which could happen, since Virginia doesn't have an electoral college.)
Right-wing preacher agrees with right-wing interviewee that, get this, women are guilty of "sexual assault" merely by wearing "sexually suggestive clothing around a man." All together now: waaaaaaah! I suppose if I'd actually listened to this live, I'd be hysterically laughing at the notion that this "involuntary surge of pleasure" a man feels when he sees a scantily-clad woman is actually a "chemical sexual assault." But Jesus Mary and Joseph they just sound like two guys who can't handle themselves around attractive women.
Finally, when I heard about the indictments of three Trump campaign officials on various charges including conspiring against the United States, my first reaction was: so when's that terrorist attack coming? But now I wonder if it'll ever come -- the more law enforcement seems to back President Trump into a corner, the more his most strident votaries cry TEH FAKE NEWZ!!!! in his defense. Maybe Mr. Trump doesn't need a terrorist attack to keep stoking the wave of rage he plans to ride to bigger majorities in Congress and to re-election. And if he's looking at the same Democrats I'm looking at, I can see why he'd think rage is all he needs.
