If you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Reps and Senators to oppose any appropriations bill that would cut EPA funding, then Environmental Defense Action still helps you do that. Don't listen to current EPA Administrator Scott "Cone of Silence" Pruitt tell you that he can streamline his department and save the taxpayer money, because the EPA doesn't have enough money now to catch polluters. And the EPA's job is catching polluters, not coddling them -- catching them ensures we have clean air and clean water, after all, while coddling them just allows more dirty energy CEOs to redistribute more worker income upward to themselves. But the Trump Administration's "Hard Power" budget wouldn't just cut funding on climate change research and state and local air quality monitoring -- it'd also cut funding for things like stopping runoff pollution and protecting our water and our soil from underground storage tank leaks. Really, they're going all out to destroy our government's ability to protect our air and water. So we must go all out to stop them.
Meanwhile, the Drug Policy Alliance helps you tell your Congressfolk to support H.R. 2920/S. 1374, the CARERS Act, which would ensure that more good Americans get access to medical marijuana. Among other things, the CARERS Act would repeal our federal government's prohibition of medical marijuana, ensure VA doctors can give advice about medical marijuana to our veterans, ease some of the federal restrictions on marijuana research, and protect medical marijuana where it's legal from overzealous federal officials like our Attorney General, who has a thing for stamping out all pot everywhere, for some reason. The Drug Policy Alliance also reminds us that giving folks medical marijuana (despite its reputation, you're not likely to get physiologically addicted to pot) might keep them from going on opioids, which has a considerably higher probability of addicting folks, and an astronomically higher probability of killing them. So, if you don't have medical marijuana, one big reason is big pharma CEOs who get rich off opioids. But they don't get all the say around here.
Finally, you may recall that the "compromise" on GMO labeling Congress passed last year mandated that our Department of Agriculture gets to create a national GMO labeling standard -- which I don't imagine would be any better under a Democratic President than a Republican one, given the corporatists Democratic Presidents have typically installed at agriculture, though they'd probably go to more effort to string us along. Anyway, we've got the President we've got, and we've got the Agriculture Secretary (former Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue) we've got, but we've also got the duty we've got as American citizens to make our will plain and unmistakeable, and so Just Label It helps you tell our Department of Agriculture to mandate strong GMO labeling standards. And we want none of this QR code stupidity, where you'd need a smartphone and a special app and an internet connection to establish whether the food right fricking in front of you has any genetically-modified ingredients in it -- we want clear labels, on all of our food. It really isn't too much to ask.
