H.R. 3222, the Do No Harm Act, would prevent folks from citing BUT MY RELIJIZZ CONSHUNZ!!!! when they don't feel like serving gays or blacks or Hispanics or anyone else they don't like. Specifically, it would amend the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 so that folks can't use it to override the Civil Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, or the Violence Against Women Act. I mean, right now folks use MY RELIJIZZ FREEDUMZ!!!! to avoid serving gays, but one could use that argument to justify discriminating against anyone. I don't feel like building a wheelchair-accessible ramp to my restaurant because Jesus is coming, and so is I don't want to waste time teaching my employees not to treat their female co-workers badly because Jesus, and I'm not giving my Hispanic employees FML because Jesus. We do remember that blacks couldn't eat at white lunch counters because Jesus, right? OK, it was the Hamitic myth, I suppose, but do you think the "religious" "conscience" crowd distinguishes between Old and New Testaments. CREDO helps you tell your Congressfolk to fight discrimination by supporting H.R. 3222.
Meanwhile, hot on the heels of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price's resignation following his apparent misuse of taxpayer funds for private flights, we should remember that Interior Secretary Zinke and EPA Administrator Pruitt have also been misspending taxpayer money. Mr. Zinke has fessed up to using private flights three times, but left out of that list that time he chartered an oil corporation's plane to fly from Las Vegas to Montana in June. Mr. Pruitt has been the more lavish spender of the two, as far as we know, racking up nearly $58,000 in private and military flights and doubling his personal security force. Lately he's become infamous for trying to install a "cone of silence" phone booth, from which he might be able to make phone calls to his corporate cronies without being overheard. We can chortle at Mr. Trump's promise to "drain the swamp" all we want, but this is really no laughing matter -- this is what happens when we put people in our government who literally do not care about serving America. So the Sierra Club helps you tell Secretaries Zinke and Pruitt to resign over their misuse of taxpayer money. Which is, after all, our money.
Finally, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell your Congressfolk to support humane immigration policy by supporting H.R. 3440/S. 1615, the DREAM Act, then CPD Action still helps you do that. Too many right-wingers love using children of undocumented immigrants in their little swordfights over Who's More Conservative, a question which should generally induce the answer "neither of you is a conservative at all!" But I digress. President Trump has announced his intention to end the DACA program, through which children of undocumented immigrants can petition our government not to be deported back to nations they won't recognize, in five months' time, and of course has told Congress they had better "do something." And a lot of these children of undocumented immigrants have grown up here and have contributed a lot to America, so we ought not to be abjectly cruel to them. (Would it be beating a dead horse to mention that none of them could possibly have consented to immigrate here? No, it would not be beating a dead horse to do that.)
