Just Foreign Policy joins with MoveOn to help you tell your Congressfolk to prod the Honduran government into investigating the murder of indigenous/ environmental rights leader Berta Cáceres, and condition future aid to Honduras on the results of that investigation. Ms. Cáceres, one of the co-founders of the Council of Indigenous Peoples of Honduras (COPINH), is one of at least a hundred activists who have been killed in Honduras since 2010, and Sen. Leahy is right that "no one...is safe in Honduras if they speak out against corruption or abuse of authority." I wouldn't blame you for arguing that Sen. Leahy's outrage is a bit late, given that our government fiddled while the current Honduran government overthrew the democratically-elected but inconveniently-liberal President Zelaya in 2009. Still, conditioning aid on better behavior is a thing worth doing. And if it brings the Big Stick of Bad PR to bear upon then-Secretary of State (and now Presidential candidate) Hillary Clinton, then tough toodles. Doing bad things should bring you bad PR.
Meanwhile, you may have heard about CBS CEO Les Moonves's stream of how-did-he-think-that-would-sound-to-normal-people comments about how much money the Donald Trump Circus makes for CBS. Hence CREDO helps you tell CBS to stop jacking up Trump coverage merely for profit. Those of you who still answer arguments about this with WELL DON'T CORPORATIONS HAVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS THEY WANT HA HA HA COMMUNIST! should attend the word "merely" in the previous sentence -- as the current frontrunner for the Republican Presidential nomination, I expect Donald Trump will get coverage, annoying as that prospect might be. But CBS currently holds over 100 TV and radio broadcasting licenses, all of which mandate that CBS stations "render such broadcasting service as will serve the public interest, convenience, or necessity to the full extent of the privileges herein conferred." See anything in there about making truckfuls of money? Me neither. But they're not supposed to get rich before they serve the public.
Finally, word on the street is that Great and Awesome Real American President Mitch McConnell plans to put S. 2609, a bill that -- like H.R. 1599, the absurdly-titled Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015 -- would create yet another "voluntary" labeling standard for genetically-modified organisms in food (because those have already worked so well!) and would pre-empt any state's effort to mandate GMO labeling within its borders (because that's so conservative!). Hence Just Label It! helps you call Sen. McConnell and tell him to stand up for Americans' actual right to know what's in their food and reject S. 2609 and any of its evil brethren. Mr. McConnell doesn't care what you think, but if we all tell him what we think anyway and he decides to go ahead and do the bidding of big ag donors, he looks bad before the people. I don't blame people for thinking politicians do whatever they want regardless of what we want. But in a democracy it's up to us to punish representatives who won't do their job.
UPDATE. Next-to-last sentence in third paragraph revised so that it makes sense.
