Maine voters will decide whether to move all state elections to a "ranked choice" system, a.k.a. the "instant runoff" system, at the polls in 2016. I've long been a supporter of "instant runoff" voting, and one might suppose that Maine voters are disgusted enough with the enormously corrupt and incompetent Gov. LePage, who won with 38 and 48 percent of the vote in 2010 and 2014, respectively. But experience is the greatest teacher.
Rick Klein finds Jeb Bush apparently calculating to be the "serious" Republican alternative on foreign policy. BFD -- anyone can look serious next to those clowns, and one might not even need to put on glasses to do it. I suppose it might work, though, because you can never count a bastard out, particularly a bastard with an absurdly rich SuperPAC that just so happens to be devoted to his election.
Mayor of Roanoke, VA actually cites the Japanese internment camps as a reason to deny city services to Syrian refugees. Who are what, class? Running from terrorists. Who are therefore not terrorists. Because an actual terrorist would get into America some other way, a way that doesn't take nearly two years. Everyone has a right to an opinion, but not everyone has the right to have their opinion proclaimed as an opinion worth hearing.
Donald Trump wonders if maybe Muslims in America should wear some kind of special identification -- you know, like Jews had to wear in Nazi Germany. Is making some citizens wear a target the mark of a truly free and secure society? Someone needs to remind Donald Trump that the damn Nazis lost. And I'd wonder if maybe your average Trump voter might at least say well, wait a minute, that's something that could be done to me by a President Hillary Clinton, but Trump voters already typically think they're the most oppressed people on Earth because of Starbucks' red coffee cups or whatever manufactured outrage Our Glorious Elites enable on a daily basis.
Finally, Mr. Trump persists in calling Bernie Sanders a "Communist." And here's the paragraph I wrote last time he did that: "Virtually no one who brandishes 'Communist' as a scare word these days can conceive of one-party elections, the abolition of capital ownership, complete central planning of the economy, citizens living in one-bedroom apartments assigned by the state, or the fear of being literally followed around by police at any moment. But that's what Communism is, and calling Bernie Sanders a Communist insults all the billions of good people who suffered under real Communist oppression." Hey, if Mr. Trump isn't going to try harder, why should I?
