Muslims worldwide condemn terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday. Remember this when right-wingers say ZOMG WHY DO TEH MUZLIMZ NEVER CONDEMNZ TEH TERRORIZMZ!!!!!
Hackers reveal that Securus Technologies, which provides phone service to many of our nation's prisons, has been recording phone calls between prisoners and attorneys, meaning they very likely violated attorney-client confidentiality and thus broke the law. Some fools will laugh when they hear this and say, so what, they're just prisoners. I sure hope such folks don't have to revise their opinions by going to jail themselves.
Maine Attorney General sues a Planned Parenthood protestor for protesting too loudly. Both state and federal law guarantee a citizen's right to get legal health services without "disruption," and while Mr. Ingalls's protests can apparently be heard "in the second-floor counseling and examination rooms of the facility," I don't think that alone would meet the bar. But I presume he could be prosecuted if he's violating noise ordinances, since the First Amendment only guarantees a right to speak, not a right to speak at a volume that actually physically interferes with others' speech.
Ain't nothing so bad that Rand Paul can't make it worse: Sen. Paul, in saying that "only certain opinions are acceptable on college campuses," adds that "(i)t’s almost like they’ll put you in prison for challenging the religious dogma on climate change." Mr. Paul would have to prove there's anything particularly "religious" or "dogmatic" about climate change, but more to the point, it is not "almost" like "prison" until colleges start actually detaining students for expressing contrary views. You'd think a "libertarian" would be more sensitive to all of that.
Finally, the notorious House Freedom Caucus apparently plans to draft a Contract
On With America II. They think of themselves as "anti-establishment," but make no mistake: their wish list, which includes "overhauling" Social Security and Medicare, repealing the Estate Tax, cutting regulations, cutting corporate taxes, and expanding offshore drilling, is an establishment wet dream. Democrats could run against that by defending Social Security and Medicare, by defending clean air and clean water regulations, and by defending making everyone, including the wealthy and corporations, pay their fair share so we can all have bridges and roads and libraries and firefighters and police officers. I kid, of course -- Democrats don't have the guts to do any of that.
