The U.S. Export-Import Bank is mulling whether to finance the Adani Group's coal project in Australia; the project calls for massive amounts of coal going by rail to the Coral Sea, where ships would bring it through the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. You may already see the problem: if a ship carrying Australian coal goes down near the reef, it would cause serious damage to the area, which is home to several endangered species, including loggerhead turtles. But it could be much worse than that: building the necessary export terminals at the Coral Sea would require a significant amount of dredging along the bed of the reef, which would cause irreversible damage to the Reef's ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef is already feeling the deleterious effects of climate change; once it's gone, we don't have another one. So the Sierra Club helps you tell the Import-Export Bank to abandon plans to fund the Adani Group's coal project. Why the Import-Export bank, you may be wondering? Because a lot of big Wall Street banks won't even touch it. That's saying something.
Meanwhile, H.R. 1930, the End Polluter Welfare Act, would close fossil fuel tax loopholes, end loans from our government to dirty energy projects, and end government-sponsored research on fossil fuels. After all, we kinda already know what we need to know about coal, oil and gas, don't we? H.R. 1930 would save the taxpayers over $13 billion annually, which isn't chump change, when you think of the good that we could do with that money, like rescind food stamp cuts or conduct research into renewable energy. How will our opponents respond? If they respond ZOMG TEH GUBMINT TAKEZ TEH FREEDUMZ AWAYZ!!!!, then remember that the End Polluter Welfare Act, as its title suggests, ends the kind of government handouts right-wingers profess to hate. And if they tell you that enacting these reforms would cause "blackouts," remember that they're trying to take you hostage -- after all, don't we deserve a world with reliable energy and less pollution? Friends of the Earth helps you tell your House Reps to support the End Polluter Welfare Act.
