This is sad news: a ProPublica/NPR investigation finds a litany of Red Cross failures during the two 2012 storms that hit the East coast. Really, it is a heartbreaking story, and if it looks to you like someone took over Red Cross and started running it like a heartless corporation, you could be forgiven -- the Red Cross hired a corporate executive as their new CEO in 2008, and at one point she had workers drive around in empty ambulances, for "visibility," I presume. Kids today, I swear, they forget that visibility from good works is ten thousand times better than visibility from PR voodoo.
Emily Badger describes "What It's Like to Try to Get a Voter ID When You're Disabled, Poor, or Don't Drive." Apparently such tales still don't get told enough, since too many morons still insist that getting a Voter ID is not that big a deal. Said morons were almost certainly not born in a poor hospital that didn't write out birth certificates in the early part of this century, for example.
Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) drags out his Lieutenant Governor, Rebecca Kleefisch, to say Scott Walker supports equal pay for women -- two years after Gov. Walker signed a repeal of Wisconsin's equal pay law! He's a political animal, this one. Or is he? He put this ad out on a Tuesday; I might have waited until Friday, giving his opponent just one working day before Election Day to try to kill it. Ah, it doesn't matter. He's going to win. And then our nightmare really begins.
The Center for Media and Democracy describe Maine Gov. Paul LePage's efforts to privatize the town of Fryeburg's water. It's as nasty as these things get: a corporation packs the relevant public oversight board with cronies, and then when they get ethics all of a sudden, the Governor gets legislation passed that gives him the right to appoint their replacements! Paul LePage grew up dirt poor, by the way, and he was basically homeless for two years as a child, thanks to his abusive, alcoholic father. I guess he forgot where he came from.
Finally, Fox News blowhard Keith Ablow says we should start an "American jihad," whereby we force other nations to adopt our ways, for their own good, of course. If your first response was isn't that what we already do?, you're not alone. Just remember that if the man spouting this filth had dark skin and a head covering, Keith Ablow would want him dead. Better we just never mention him again.
