Amnesty International helps you tell our government to stop shipping arms to Israel. It comes down to what I've been saying all along: you can be someone's friend without endorsing every last thing they do or want to do -- moreover, being someone's friend requires you not to be an enabler. And frankly, Israel wouldn't be able to build a massive wall around Palestine without American guns and ammo. I don't think we're going to change Israel's behavior right away, which is tragic and not just for Palestine, either, but we are starting to see change in America -- we've never been as reflexively pro-Israel as our elites have been, but just the other day a reporter got on one of the big cable news channels and ripped the "liberal" media a new one for how it's covered Israel-Palestine issues over the years, and I think they've actually covered them more effectively lately. Does any of this mean President Obama will stand up to Prime Minister Netanyahu any time soon? I doubt it. But it does mean we are closer to justice, and closer to peace, than we ever have been.
Meanwhile, word on the street is that the Senate Finance Committee will, on this very day, begin considering legislation that would stop corporations from incorporating overseas just to avoid paying American taxes. There are, unfortunately, still people in America who think that's just grand, because those corporations are sticking it to the man. But "sticking it to the man," in this case, means sticking it to yourself, because corporate inversion leads to fewer tax dollars here in the U.S., which means fewer roads and bridges get fixes and fewer cops and firefighters get paid. There are other people in America who think corporations are somehow the oppressed and should do whatever they can to get out from under the yoke of Big Gummint -- which has ensured their profitability in these trying economic times and which gives them countless unearned tax breaks. Some oppression! In any case, both NETWORK, the national Catholic social justice lobby, and USAction help you tell your Senators you oppose corporate tax tricks.
