U.S. researchers at the Commonwealth Fund find the British health care system the best out of 11 developed nations surveyed, with America coming in last. The study compiled data up to 2011, meaning it doesn't tabulate any effects the Affordable Care Act might have been having, but we spend more than twice as much per person as England does, for considerably worse results. Right-wingers will gleefully note that single-payer Canada finishes next to last, but do they really want to advertise that the fully socialized health care system (England's) is that much better?
Presbyterian Church votes, by a narrow margin, to divest from three corporations long associated with aiding Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestine. And that's how it will begin -- with corporations feeling the pressure of lost capital. Personal to those who say the Presbyterian church is no longer a "friend of Israel": do friends green light every single thing other friends want to do simply because they want to do it? Those aren't friends; those are enablers. And we should not be equating "support" or "friendship" with lock-step agreement.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal tells the Faith and Freedom Foundation that "people are ready for a hostile takeover of Washington, D.C." because they're "tired" of "the left" "trying to silence us." And then he provides indisputable documentary evidence of liberals doing anything more than winning arguments with right-wingers! I kid, of course, but this is why Bobby Jindal will never become President -- because Republicans can choose from folks like Scott Walker and Jeb Bush and Brian Sandoval who have the common sense not to say things like "hostile takeover" out loud.
Report commissioned by Pennsylvania Attorney General finds "no direct evidence" that Gov. Tom Corbett let political considerations slow his investigation into convicted child molester and former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky when Mr. Corbett was Attorney General. I never thought Mr. Corbett would have said this guy gave us campaign money, so we'll slow-walk this investigation -- but I've always thought Mr. Corbett would think such accusations unlikely simply because he knew the guy and he knew the guy's foundation, and that's more a criticism of Pennsylvania's weak campaign finance laws than of Mr. Corbett.
Finally, even the World Bank says fighting climate change would actually help the economy, not hurt it. Of course, anyone who's thought about it for a minute agrees -- who do right-wingers think will be refitting our power grid, robots? (Maybe I shouldn't give them any ideas.) And why do people elect leaders like Tony Abbott who say everything worth doing is just too hard?
