A November 24 fire killed 129 workers at a Tarzeen Fashion factory in Bangladesh -- a factory which just so happens to supply Walmart with items in its Faded Glory line. Walmart claimed ignorance of any dealings with Tarzeen, as it seems yet another subcontractor dealt directly with Tarzeen and then sold its wares to Walmart. Anyone else think these labyrinthine relationships exist pretty much to shield the big corporations from accountability? When the fire alarms went off, factory management told these poor folks to go back to work. The one emergency exit was locked. The factory's fire extinguishers didn't work -- apparently, the factory got them just to impress the inspectors. Why would anyone want to be sullied by all this corruption? CREDO helps you tell Walmart to do more for better factory conditions overseas.
Meanwhile, the "liberal" media never, ever learns -- CBS News flogs the right-wing talking point that TEH TAX HIKES KILLZ TEH SMALL BIZNIZZEZ!!!!! The expiration of Bush Mobb tax cuts for the top two brackets would, per the Tax Policy Center, affect approximately 2.5% of all small businesses -- but CBS (like ABC before it) prefers to relay that information as ZOMG 941,000 SMALL BIZNIZZEZ!!!!! They even made a graphic. See how big that number is? It's a really big number. You know what would have been just as true? A graphic showing the 37,640,000 small businesses that would be completely unaffected by the expiring tax cuts for the top two brackets. Here's CBS News's feedback form; choose "CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley" from the drop-down menu and refer to the Wyatt Andrews report of November 29.
