U.S. Senator Jon Corzine, who's running for Governor in New Jersey, had just opened up a lead on his opponent, former West Windsor Mayor Doug Forrester, when Corzine's ex-wife (they divorced in 2003) suddenly lashed out at him. "He did let us down, and he'll probably let New Jersey down, too," she said. Strangely, Forrester's wife, Andrea, said something similar in an ad that worked fairly well for Forrester last month: "He's never let his family down, and he won't let New Jersey down."
Anyone else see the Hand of Rove in this? I shudder to think what they'll inflict on Tim Kaine in Virginia.
Of course, this could backfire: 2005 ain't 2004, New Jersey ain't Illinois (right, Jack Ryan?), and Philadelphia Mayor John Street promptly opened up a double-digit lead on Sam Katz after police found an FBI bug in his office in October of 2003.
I hope it does backfire. Republicans ought to try winning races with better arguments, not soap-opera tactics.
