Remember yesterday, when we discussed the Delhi (LA) Charter School's plan to force "suspected" pregnant girls to take pregnancy tests, and then throw them out of school if they refuse or test positive? Yeah, I was pretty snarky about it, but I also thought, there'll be an action alert for that by the end of the week. Obviously I forgot what century this was, because I got one the very next day, from change.org, and it's right here, ready for your John Hancock. You know what else I thought when I read about that? Same thing you did: this is illegal and unconstitutional in about a gazillion ways, not least of which is that it violates Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. And I'll say it again: no school even thinks to punish a young-dumb-and-full-of teenage boy for knocking a girl up.
Meanwhile, the Sierra Club helps you tell your Congressfolks to ban diesel and diesel by-products from fracking chemicals. See? It's not all about setting our tap water on fire -- it's also about keeping carcinogens (like benzene, toluene, and ethyl benzene, all of which you may find in diesel fuel) out of our tap water. Frackers used over 30 million gallons of diesel fuel in 19 states from 2005 to 2009 -- and 2005, you may remember, was when the Energy Policy Act exempted frackers from all sorts of Clean Water Act disclosure requirements. I shudder to think what our more right-leaning Congressfolk will say when we confront them about this -- after all, the single greatest health care advance of the last hundred-plus years was clean water. Will they say that businesses just can't make money boo-hoo if we make them not take a dump in our water?
