Justice Department finds that, in mostly-black Meridian, MS, county and municipal police collude with Youth Services to create a "school to prison pipeline," where children get arrested and jailed for such egregious offenses as flatulence and violation of dress codes. Right-wingers love to tell us that we're all so past racism -- so much so, it seems, that a mainstream media outlet can report this in 2012 (albeit on one of their blogs).
Government scientists inform us that July 2012 was the hottest month on record, and drought now afflicts over 60 percent of the country, at least in the Lower 48. So Fox News must have been spending the last few days telling us that global warming is real, since they used to tell us global warming was fake whenever we had a big snowstorm in 2009 or 2010, right? Ha, ha.
Big drug corporations spend about $19 on marketing for every dollar they spend on new drug research, says London medical journal BMJ. And they're always telling us they can't "innovate" if our government interferes with their profit-making in any way! Apparently, even when our government keeps its hands off, and it does, the corporations still can't innovate. If these are our best and brightest...
Rep. Mazie Hirono (HI-2) beats former Rep. Ed Case soundly in the Hawaii Democratic Senate primary by a 57-41 margin. I was in Hawaii during the second half of March, and I saw hundreds of Ed Case signs and exactly zero Mazie Hirono signs; I surmised she must've thought she had the primary in the bag, which hypothesis the evidence bears out. Ms. Hirono's a much better choice than Ed Case, anyway -- in a state that has actual moderate Republicans, Ed Case is a Blue Dog, and what purpose does that serve?
Robert Reich tells us that the GOP is going very far out of its way to "erase" George W. Bush from recent memory, lest voters see similarities between Mr. Romney and Mr. Bush and remember what a disaster the Bush Mobb years were. I must admit I, certainly, have been so focused on the here and now that I haven't done enough to remind folks enough what a disaster George W. Bush was. Not that I "celebrate" the Clinton years, either.
Celebrating Clinton is easy now that we have the Bush II years as a juxtaposition. Besides, Presidents' flaws grow dimmer the further removed they are from office. Look at Reagan and how the GOP has lionized him. Although I suppose death helped accelerate the process a bit. No if we could just erase all of the "socialist" talk that they have him on tape saying....
