You may recall that Gov. Corbett signed a gas-drilling moratorium into law, as part of the recent state budget bill -- but that the moratorium only covers Bucks, Montgomery, Northampton, and Lehigh Counties. You may also recall that Republicans' hold on these counties has, ah, slipped in recent years. As I said before, Republicans know gas drilling will befoul your drinking water; they just don't care, unless they can gain some political advantage from it. Look, they'll say to the four counties, we protected you from the lousy policy we foisted on the whole state! Some folks will fall for that, I'm sure, but I have more faith in humanity than to think the moratorium will make masses of people in those counties grateful. In any case, why should four counties get a moratorium that all Pennsylvanians deserve? Don't all Pennsylvanians deserve drinking water that doesn't light on fire? Thus Penn Environment helps you petition the Pennsylvania state legislature for a complete moratorium on gas drilling.
Meanwhile, if you've missed previous opportunities to tell the House to scuttle the Agricultural Appropriations rider that would require the Department of Agriculture to grant temporary permits to genetically-modified seed before the Department has finished determining if the seed is safe, Sign On helps you do that. Seriously, why would we make our government let corporations plant crops that could contaminate other crops and might not be safe for us to eat? You'd think our safety would be our government's main concern, right? Apparently not for the bold and daring men and women of the Congress of Screw You, who act as if our government's sole concern is making sure big corporations make as much money as they can. If we Americans dare to cherish things other than mammon -- and no matter how bad reality TV looks, I assure you that we do -- then I guess the Congress of Screw You would look down on us. They're welcome to take that to the Pearly Gates if they want, but down here, we'll keep fighting them.
